BLOG TOUR: The Rake's Daughter by Anne Gracie

I'm excited to be a part of the Blog Tour for The Rake's Daughter by Anne Gracie! I received a free electronic copy for honest review from the publisher. Thanks so much to Berkley and Anne Gracie for letting me be a part of the tour!

Title: The Rake's Daughter (The Brides of Bellaire Gardens #2)
Author: Anne Gracie
Published by: Berkley
Released: July 26, 2022
Source: Electronic Review Copy Provided by Publisher
Goodreads      Amazon

Synopsis: An earl is forced to play matchmaker for the daughters of a rake in a smart and witty new Regency romance from the national bestselling author of The Scoundrel’s Daughter.
Recently returned to England, Leo, the new Earl of Salcott, discovers he's been thrust into the role of guardian to an heiress, the daughter of a notorious rake. Even worse, his wealthy ward has brought her half-sister, the beautiful but penniless Isobel, with her. Leo must introduce Clarissa to London society and find her a suitable husband, but her illegitimate half sister, Izzy, is quite another matter. Her lowly birth makes her quite unacceptable in aristocratic circles.  However, the girls are determined to enter society together. They’re devoted to each other and despite the risk of scandal and ruin if Izzy’s parentage is discovered, they refuse to be separated. Much to Leo’s frustration, nothing he says or does will convince them otherwise. To further complicate matters, sparks fly every time Leo and Izzy interact.
Called away for a quick visit to his country estate, Leo instructs the young ladies to stay quietly at home and consider their position. But when he returns, he's infuriated to discover that Clarissa and Izzy have launched themselves into society—and with tremendous success! There's no going back. Now Leo must enter society himself, protect Clarissa from fortune hunters, and try not to be driven mad by the sharp-witted, rebellious Izzy, and the rich, unworthy men drawn to her beauty. (Synopsis from Goodreads)

My Thoughts: I love historical romance. It's so fun. There is nothing like that banter and watching two people fall in love.
The premise for The Rake's Daughter is what sold me in the beginning. I just loved the sound of it, the idea of it. I had a lot of fun with this novel. Izzy and Leo got on each other's nerves a lot, which was very enjoyable. I also really enjoyed how Izzy gave it right back to Leo in some situations.
I enjoyed the romance. It wasn't crazy or excessive, but it was nice. I do wish Leo would have figured his stuff out sooner.
I definitely want to read more in this series. I had a lot of fun with it.

Reading Right Now! (339)

Another week of 2022 at an end.
What I'm Reading Right Now! is...

The Death of Jane Lawrence by Caitlin Starling -- I'm enjoying this spooky read. My reading has kind of slowed down a little, which I'm not happy with, but it isn't because of this book.
I've read one other thing by Caitlin Starling, The Luminous Dead, and I enjoyed that one too.
This one is a gothic horror. It definitely has me interested as to what is actually happening and going on.

What are you Reading?

Synopsis: A moving and deeply engaging debut novel about a young Native American man struggling to find strength in his familial identity, from a stellar new voice in literary fiction.
Told in a series of voices, Calling for a Blanket Dance takes us into the life of Ever Geimausaddle through the multigenerational perspectives of his family as they soldier through a myriad of difficulties: his father's sudden kidney failure and subsequent disability, his mother's struggle to hold on to her job and care for her husband, the constant resettlement of the family, and Ever's own bottled-up rage at the instability all around him. Meanwhile, all of Ever's relatives have ideas about who he is and who he should be. His Cherokee grandmother urges the family to move across the state to find security; his dying grandfather hopes to reunite him with his heritage through traditional gourd dances; his Kiowa cousin reminds him that he's connected to an ancestral past. And once an adult, Ever must take the strength given to him by his relatives to save not only himself, but also the next generation of family.
How will this young man visualize a place for himself when the world hasn't given him a place to start with? Honest, heartbreaking, and ultimately uplifting, Calling for a Blanket Dance is the story of how Ever Geimausaddle found his way to home. (Synopsis from Goodreads)

My Thoughts: This is not my usual type of read, but I enjoyed it. It introduced me to topics and subjects that I wasn't familiar with. I loved learning and experiencing something new.
This book is a great experience. It covers a lot of topics. I'd definitely recommend giving it a read.

Title: The Case of the Murderous Dr. Cream: The Hunt for a Victorian Era Serial Killer
Author: Dean Jobb
Published by: Algonquin Books
Released: July 5, 2022
Source: Review Copy Provided by Publisher
Goodreads      Amazon

Synopsis: “When a doctor does go wrong he is the first of criminals,” Sherlock Holmes observed during one of his most baffling investigations. “He has nerve and he has knowledge.”
In the span of fifteen years, Dr. Thomas Neill Cream poisoned at least ten people in the United States, Britain, and Canada, a death toll with almost no precedents. Structured around Cream’s London murder trial in 1892, when he was finally brought to justice, The Case of the Murderous Dr. Cream exposes the blind trust given to medical practitioners, as well as the flawed detection methods, bungled investigations, corrupt officials, and stifling morality of Victorian society that allowed Cream to prey on vulnerable and desperate women, many of whom had turned to him for medical help.
Dean Jobb vividly re-creates this largely forgotten historical account against the backdrop of the birth of modern policing and newly adopted forensic methods, though most police departments still scoffed at using science to solve crimes. But then most police departments could hardly imagine that serial killers existed—the term was unknown at the time. As the Chicago Tribune wrote then, Cream’s crimes marked the emergence of a new breed of killer, one who operated without motive or remorse, who “murdered simply for the sake of murder.” (Synopsis from Goodreads)

I'm excited to be a part of the Blog Tour for The Binding Room by Nadine Matheson! I received a free electronic copy for honest review from the publisher. Thanks so much to Hanover Square Press and Nadine Matheson for letting me be a part of the tour!

Title: The Binding Room (Inspector Anjelica Henley #2)
Author: Nadine Matheson
Published by: Hanover Square Press
Released: July 12, 2022
Source: Electronic Review Copy Provided by Publisher
Goodreads      Amazon

Synopsis: 17 hours, 20 minutes
Detective Anjelica Henley confronts a series of ritualistic murders in this heart-pounding thriller about race, power and the corrupt institutions that threaten us
When Detective Anjelica Henley is called to investigate the murder of a popular preacher in his own church, she discovers a second victim, tortured and tied to a bed in an upstairs room. He is alive, but barely, and his body shows signs of a dark religious ritual.
With a revolving list of suspects and the media spotlight firmly on her, Henley is left with more questions than answers as she attempts to untangle both crimes. But when another body appears, the case takes on a new urgency. Unless she can apprehend the killer, the next victim may just be Henley herself.
Drawing on her experiences as a criminal attorney, Nadine Matheson deftly explores issues of race, class and justice through an action-packed story that will hold you captive until the last terrifying page. (Synopsis from Goodreads)

My Thoughts: I'm so happy to see another case from Detective Anjelica Henley! I will admit that this is a little long, but I flew through all those pages. I would recommend reading The Jigsaw Man first, because this one picks up right where the first one left off.
Anjelica has a new case to investigate and a new killer to catch. This was a very entertaining read and I really enjoyed it. I think fans of police procedurals will really enjoy this. There's plenty of danger and killing. There's a real race to stop the bad guy once and for all.
I had a good time with this book. It was a thrill. I'd definitely recommend giving it a read.

My Thoughts: This book is perfect vacation reading. It's a fun time. It kept me flipping pages. We've definitely got some mayhem and difficult characters in this.
Our main character Rachel has been seduced by some privileged young people at her new summer job. These people seem great to Rachel at first, but eventually things go wrong. It was very fun to watch everything come crashing down.
This was a great, quick read. It was the perfect summer entertainment. I'd definitely read more from Lizzy Barber.

I'm excited to be a part of the Blog Tour for The Poet's House by Jean Thompson! I received a free copy for honest review from the publisher. Thanks so much to Algonquin Books and Jean Thompson for letting me be a part of the tour!

Title: The Poet's House
Author: Jean Thompson
Published by: Algonquin Books
Released: July 12, 2022
Source: Review Copy Provided by Publisher
Goodreads       Amazon

Synopsis: A warm and witty story of a young woman who gets swept up in the rivalries and love affairs of a dramatic group of writers.
Carla is stuck. In her twenties and working for a landscaper, she’s been told she’s on the wrong path by everyone—from her mom, who wants her to work at the hospital, to her boyfriend, who is dropping not-so-subtle hints that she should be doing something that matters.
Then she is hired for a job at the home of Viridian, a lauded and lovely aging poet who introduces Carla to an eccentric circle of writers. At first she is perplexed by their predilection for reciting lines in conversation, the stories of their many liaisons, their endless wine-soaked nights. Soon, though, she becomes enamored with this entire world: with Viridian, whose reputation has been defined by her infamous affair with a male poet, Mathias; with Viridian’s circle; and especially with the power of words, the “ache and hunger that can both be awakened and soothed by a poem,” a hunger that Carla feels sharply. When a fight emerges over a vital cache of poems that Mathias wrote about Viridian, Carla gets drawn in. But how much will she sacrifice for a group that may or may not see her as one of their own?
A delightfully funny look at the art world—sometimes petty, sometimes transactional, sometimes transformative— The Poet’s House is also a refreshingly candid story of finding one’s way, with words as our lantern in the dark. (Synopsis from Goodreads)

My Thoughts: This was fun. Carla experiences wisdom and advice from a group of eccentric writers. Carla is not sure what she wants to do with her life. She's getting pressure from her loved ones to do this and that. They want her have a stable job to work everyday. Carla is struggling, and then she gets hired by an aging poet named Viridian. He introduces her to people and ideas that really open her eyes.
I enjoyed Carla coming into this circle and being introduced to people that she would never have met before. They have a different worldview when it comes to life and art that was very interesting to read about.
This was a nice book to just relax and read. It was a good time.

Title: Miss Aldridge Regrets

Goodreads      Amazon

Synopsis: The glittering RMS Queen Mary. A nightclub singer on the run. An aristocratic family with secrets worth killing for.
London, 1936. Lena Aldridge wonders if life has passed her by. The dazzling theatre career she hoped for hasn't worked out. Instead, she's stuck singing in a sticky-floored basement club in Soho, and her married lover has just left her. But Lena has always had a complicated life, one shrouded in mystery as a mixed-race girl passing for white in a city unforgiving of her true racial heritage.
She's feeling utterly hopeless until a stranger offers her the chance of a lifetime: a starring role on Broadway and a first-class ticket on the Queen Mary bound for New York. After a murder at the club, the timing couldn't be better, and Lena jumps at the chance to escape England. But death follows her onboard when an obscenely wealthy family draws her into their fold just as one among them is killed in a chillingly familiar way. As Lena navigates the Abernathy's increasingly bizarre family dynamic, she realizes that her greatest performance won't be for an audience, but for her life.
With seductive glamor, simmering family drama, and dizzying twists, Louise Hare makes her beguiling US debut. (Synopsis from Goodreads)

My Thoughts: I liked this. As soon as I read the synopsis, I knew it was something that I wanted to read. The idea of the story just really called to me. I found this to be a really solid read. I liked how it was set on the RMS Queen Mary. I liked our main character of Lena. I also liked the mystery of it all. It kept me turning pages and wanting to know more.
This book has a locked room mystery vibe to it, with our cast being confined to the Queen Mary. I love books with the locked room mystery angle.
I don't know if I was blown away by the mystery element, but I was intrigued by it, and really enjoyed trying to figure everything out.
I'd definitely recommend this one. It's a good time.

Synopsis: A young woman has one month and a closetful of shoes to discover the future she thought she'd lost in this captivating new novel from the author of Eliza Starts a Rumor and Nine Women, One Dress.
Esme Nash is eager to leave her small town and begin her carefully planned post-grad life: a move to New York City, an apartment with her loving college boyfriend, and a fancy job at an art gallery. But when tragedy strikes, instead of heading to Manhattan, she returns home to care for her ailing father, leaving every bit of her dream behind.
Seven trying years later, Esme is offered a dog-sitting job in Greenwich Village by a mysterious stranger, giving her access to all of her long-buried hopes and dreams--as well as to an epic collection of designer shoes. Esme jumps at a second chance to step into the future she's sure was meant to be hers.
As she retraces her steps, one pair of borrowed shoes at a time, making new friends and reconnecting with her old love, Esme tries on versions of herself she didn't know existed. But the hazy August days and warm summer nights pass too quickly, and Esme must decide how much of the life she imagined still fits, and what--and who--is on the road ahead of her. My Thoughts: I thought this story was cute, and I enjoyed it. There were also so many shoes! If you're a shoe lover, you're going to love this book. It's definitely a fun feature with the focus on the shoes.

I enjoyed my time reading this one. It was a fun story to lose myself in. I'd definitely recommend giving it a read.
