Synopsis: He had it all planned…until she showed up.

Jedidiah Stephens came to the Colorado Rockies for one to uncover the truth behind the fire that killed her family. She’s been chasing down clues, and everything has led her to an isolated campground. Her plan is to get a job there so she can investigate who comes and goes. Getting involved with her boss, Memphis Osborn, the ruggedly handsome groundskeeper, is definitely not part of the plan.

When Jedidiah arrives on the scene, Memphis just knows she's up to something. He can see the desperation in her eyes and warily agrees to hire her. As they work side by side, Diah triggers his deepest protective instincts—and the chemistry between them ignites.

But the more Diah digs into her family’s past, the more secrets she unravels…and the more afraid she becomes. She lost everything once before. She’ll never forgive herself if now she loses Memphis, too.
(Synopsis from Goodreads)

My Thoughts: This one was fun because it incorporates a mystery with romance. The mystery kept me interested and the romance was cute.
I did have a little laugh over the names though. Jedidiah for a lady is very unique. I've never heard that one before. Memphis is a strong name, also not one I've heard for a character before.
I can see a lot of people enjoying this one!

My Thoughts: I was really drawn in by the synopsis of this one. I love an isolated setting where the group becomes trapped in some way. It's just a lot of fun.

Synopsis: An overprotective father has lived as a recluse until his adult daughter – Stacie Jones – returns from Paris, in need of radical brain surgery. Peculiarly, he appears to almost welcome her illness, it does at least mean she is back under his roof – and his control.

In the meantime, the country is rapt with the scandalous case of murdered bigamist Kylie Gillingham. Her husbands, son and best friend are left dealing with a confused mix of emotions: grief, fear and triumph.

But none of them can piece their lives back together while suspicion of her death hangs over at least one of the husbands.

Despite the evidence, Kylie’s two sons won’t accept she is dead and gone. They set out to search for her and find themselves in the same town as Stacie and her father…

How are these families linked and can any of them ever be a real family again after such tragedy?
(Synopsis from Goodreads)

My Thoughts: I do love a mystery, so I was very excited to give this one a read. The synopsis throws a lot at you, so it took me a little bit to wrap my head around the plot.
This is a sequel to a book called Woman Last Seen and you do need to read it in order for this second one to make sense.
I enjoyed Two Dead Wives. It kept me interested and guessing. I'd definitely read more by Adele Parks in the future.

(Synopsis from Goodreads)

My Thoughts: There are times when I just crave a good, ol' historical romance and An Inconvenient Earl has filled that desire. Julia London is a historical romance author who I recognize, and I like her books.
This one was a lot of fun. I really liked the premise of it. It was a good time seeing how Emma was going to keep living her life by keeping the public thinking her husband was still alive. This one just had the kind of premise that makes reading historicals so fun.

My Thoughts: I'm always super intrigued by John Marrs stuff, so I couldn't wait to read The Vacation! I really enjoyed the sound of the synopsis. I could tell it was going to be a fun time.
This has a large cast of characters and a bunch of them had secrets. I was never bored reading this one. I did sometimes have trouble keeping who was who in my head.
This had a fun twist that I definitely enjoyed.

BLOG TOUR: City of Betrayal by Victoria Thompson

I'm excited to be a part of the Blog Tour for City of Betrayal by Victoria Thompson! I received a free electronic copy for an honest review from the publisher. Thanks so much to Berkley and Victoria Thompson for letting me be a part of the tour!

Title: City of Betrayal (Counterfeit Lady #7)
Author: Victoria Thompson
Published by: Berkley
Released: December 5, 2023
Source: Electronic Review Copy Provided by Publisher
Goodreads          Amazon

Synopsis: A year has passed since Elizabeth Bates ran her last con. Life has been simpler, although not nearly as exciting, but she has thrown herself into working to get the 19th Amendment ratified by thirty-six states to become the law of the land. Since every other Southern state has already rejected the amendment, it seems unlikely Tennessee will be an exception . . . but it's their only hope, so the suffragists descend on Tennessee for the final battle.

Elizabeth’s ability to interact with difficult men and to persuasively explain all the advantages of allowing women to vote—all skills she perfected as a grifter—have made her a valuable member of the team. But she would never have expected the lengths to which some would go to keep the vote out of women's hands. She'll need to devise the perfect con or the suffragists' life's work could all be for nothing.
(Synopsis from Goodreads)

My Thoughts: This was a fun historical fiction. I enjoyed reading it. This story is very, very focused on the fight for the 19th Amendment. It's pretty much the story's sole focus. I could have done with some more plot, so more cons. I do really enjoy historical fiction, but I want more of the escapism that comes with it.
I think other books in this series are a little more fun than this one is.
Readers who are really, really into the 19th Amendment and that time in history will enjoy this one.
This is a great series, but this isn't the strongest book in it. It's still good though.

Playing the game from all sides, Simone enlists Hunter’s help in her investigation into his family—whether he realizes it or not. But is she so desperate for closure that she'll risk imploding her carefully rebuilt life?
(Synopsis from Goodreads)

My Thoughts: I'm always in the mood for a thriller! I also love a good team up. The synopsis for Perfect Little Lives was the first thing that caught my eye. It just sounded really intriguing with a mystery to solve.
This had a lot of stuff that it wanted to do. It was part thriller, part romance. I don't know if it all gelled together all the time.
I had a good time reading this. I was interested to see how everything was going to play out in the end.

Released: December 5, 2023
Source: Electronic Review Copy Provided by Publisher
Goodreads          Amazon

Synopsis: Rival archaeologists must team up on a secret Aztec expedition, or it could leave their careers—and hearts—in ruins.

Archaeologist Dr. Socorro “Corrie” Mejía has a bone to pick. Literally.

It’s been Corrie’s life goal to lead an expedition deep into the Mexican jungle in search of the long-lost remains of her ancestor, Chimalli, an ancient warrior of the Aztec empire. But when she is invited to join an all-expenses-paid dig to do just that, Corrie is sure it’s too good to be true...and she’s right.

As the world-renowned expert on Chimalli, by rights Corrie should be leading the expedition, not sharing the glory with her disgustingly handsome nemesis. But Dr. Ford Matthews has been finding new ways to best her since they were in grad school. Ford certainly isn’t thrilled either—with his life in shambles, the last thing he needs is a reminder of their rocky past.

But as the dig begins, it becomes clear they’ll need to work together when they realize a thief is lurking around their campsite, forcing the pair to keep their discoveries—and lingering attraction—under wraps. With money-hungry artifact smugglers, the Mexican authorities, and the lies between them closing in, there’s only one way this all ends—explosively. (Synopsis from Goodreads
)

My Thoughts: As soon as I saw this cover, I knew I wanted to read it. It just looked so fun, and I love a fun book! I wasn't wrong with my initial thoughts, this was a lot of fun. I loved the dueling archaeologists who are rivals, but obviously something more.
I just really loved the adventure of this. It was a really fun ride.
I can see a lot of people enjoying this one.

Reading Right Now! (347)

Look at me, back with another Reading Right Now! post.
I'm obviously not very good at consistency and I make no promises that I will get better at it.

The Outlaws Scarlett and Browne by Jonathan Stroud -- I love, love, love Stroud's Lockwood & Co Series, so I have to read all of his other stuff!
I saw this one at the library and decided to give it a read. I don't have a strong opinion yet because I just started it. I think it's going to be a good time though.

That's what I'm Reading Right Now! What are you reading?

Goodreads          Amazon

Synopsis: She’s not here to make friends. She’s here to make trouble.

With her piercings, tattoos and spiky blond hair, Ellen Truesdale doesn’t quite fit in with the other folks in Coyote Canyon—and that’s just fine with her. She’s only here to put her father out of business, as payback for abandoning her when she was young.

Or is she more interested in finally proving that she was worth keeping?

Either way, she’s struggling to keep her rival well-drilling company afloat. And being a single woman in a male-dominated field has started to take a toll. So when Hendrix Durrant steps in to help, Ellen has no choice but to let him—even though he happens to be her father’s business partner and therefore her enemy. But the closer she works with him, the more she sees what she’s been missing…in life and love. And once she lets go of her anger long enough to learn the truth about her past, she might just find the family she’s always wanted.
(Synopsis from Goodreads)

My Thoughts: I enjoyed this one. Ellen is one determined lady.
This is a book that deals with strained family relationships. Ellen is trying to get back at her estranged father. This actually had more going on with it then I expected.
I'm always a sucker for small towns, so of course I really liked that aspect.
I also enjoyed the dynamic between Ellen and Hendrix. I appreciated that Ellen was one tough girl. She entered a field that is dominated mainly by men, and she had the drive to succeed in it.
I can see a lot of people enjoying this one. It's a solid story.

Synopsis: He’s Emerald Creek’s hottest cowboy—and the one man she shouldn’t want

As a nutritionist, she can help Egan’s dad recover from his health scare, but it’s not so easy to get her own heart back on track. Because despite shared guilt and family pressure, she’s falling fast, and Egan is right there with her…
(Synopsis from Goodreads)

My Thoughts: Yee-haw! I feel like that must be said or thought when a Cowboy book comes into your hands. This one had so much drama in the backstory.
Not only do we have a cowboy, but Egan is also a military man. Alana is the widow of his best friend, who he feels guilty over his death.
It's such drama when the best friend's girl is involved. There's even more drama with the secret infidelity of Alana's dead husband.
I had a good time reading this. I liked the love story. I obviously enjoyed the drama. I can see a lot of other people enjoying this one too.

Synopsis: Winner of the 2021 PEN/Bellwether Prize for Socially Engaged Fiction, a thought-provoking and enchanting debut about a Black woman doing whatever it takes to protect all she loves at the beginning of the civil rights movement in Alabama.

It’s 1957, and after leaving the only home she has ever known, Alice Young steps off the bus into the all-Black town of New Jessup, Alabama, where residents have largely rejected integration as the means for Black social advancement. Instead, they seek to maintain, and fortify, the community they cherish on their “side of the woods.” In this place, Alice falls in love with Raymond Campbell, whose clandestine organizing activities challenge New Jessup’s longstanding status quo and could lead to the young couple’s expulsion—or worse—from the home they both hold dear. But as Raymond continues to push alternatives for enhancing New Jessup’s political power, Alice must find a way to balance her undying support for his underground work with her desire to protect New Jessup from the rising pressure of upheaval from inside, and outside, their side of town.

Jamila Minnicks’s debut novel is both a celebration of Black joy and a timely examination of the opposing viewpoints that attended desegregation in America. Readers of Brit Bennett’s The Vanishing Half and Robert Jones, Jr.’s The Prophets will love Moonrise Over New Jessup. (Synopsis from Goodreads

All she has to do is interview Henry “Ash” Asherwood, a reclusive mega billionaire, twice named People’s Sexiest Man Alive, who wants her help in writing a book that reveals a shocking secret about his late grandmother and Daphne du Maurier. But when Olivia arrives at his Malibu estate, nothing is as it seems. The more Olivia digs into his grandmother’s past, the more questions she has—and before she knows it, she’s trapped in a gothic mystery of her own.

With as many twists and turns as the California coast, The Fiction Writer is a thriller that explores the boundaries of creative freedom and whose stories we have the right to tell.

My Thoughts: All the synopsis had to mention was Daphne du Maurier, and I was sold! I had a lot of fun reading this one. I loved the isolated setting, the strange mega billionaire, and discovering the secrets of the past with our main character Olivia.
This book does take a while to reveal it's secrets. Olivia does do some things that don't help the mystery really move forward. A more focused detective could have probably solved this one sooner.
If you like Daphne du Maurier and gothic novels, then this would be a fun one to read. I love the idea of it all.

Synopsis: Calladia Cunnington curses the day she met Astaroth the demon, but when he shows up memoryless, why does she find him so helpless . . . and sort of hot?

Calladia Cunnington knows she's rough around the edges, despite being the heir to one of small-town Glimmer Falls' founding witch families. While her gym obsession is a great outlet for her anxieties and anger, her hot temper still gets the best of her and manifests in bar brawls. When Calladia saves someone from a demon attack one night, though, she's happy to put her magic and rage to good use . . . until she realizes the man she saved is none other than Astaroth, the ruthless demon who orchestrated a soul bargain on her best friend.

Astaroth is a legendary soul bargainer and one of the nine members of the demon high council--except he can't remember any of this. Suffering from amnesia after being banished to the mortal plane, Astaroth doesn't know why a demon named Moloch is after him, nor why the muscular, angry, hot-in-a-terrifying-way witch who saved him hates him so much.

Unable to leave anyone in such a vulnerable state--even the most despicable demon--Calladia grudgingly decides to help him. (Besides, punching an amnesiac would be in poor taste.) The two set out on an uneasy road trip to find the witch who might be able to restore Astaroth's memory so they can learn how to defeat Moloch. Calladia vows that once Astaroth is cured, she'll kick his ass, but the more time she spends with the snarky yet utterly charming demon, the more she realizes she likes this new, improved Astaroth . . . and maybe she doesn't want him to recover his memories, after all.

My Thoughts: I love stories like this, so as soon as I read the synopsis for A Demon's Guide to Wooing a Witch, I had a good feeling. There is just something so fun about a witchy romance.
I definitely had a good time with this one. This is the second book in the Glimmer Falls Series, so it probably wouldn't be a bad idea to check out the first book first.
I liked the dynamic Calladia and Astaroth shared. I also really enjoyed the switch of Calladia being the buff and tough one.
I can see a lot of people enjoying this book, and this series! If you're looking for a fun paranormal romance, add this to your radar.
