Title: Kissing Kosher

Synopsis: Step 1: Get the secret recipe. Step 2: Don’t fall in love…

Avital Cohen isn’t wearing underpants—woefully, for unsexy reasons. Chronic pelvic pain has forced her to sideline her photography dreams and her love life. It’s all she can do to manage her family’s kosher bakery, Best Babka in Brooklyn, without collapsing.

She needs hired help.

And distractingly handsome Ethan Lippmann seems the perfect fit.

Except Ethan isn’t there to work—he’s undercover, at the behest of his ironfisted grandfather. Though Lippmann’s is a household name when it comes to mass-produced kosher baked goods, they don’t have the charm of Avital’s bakery. Or her grandfather’s world-famous pumpkin spice babka recipe.

As they bake side by side, Ethan soon finds himself more interested in Avital than in stealing family secrets, especially as he helps her find the chronic pain relief—and pleasure—she’s been missing.

But perfecting the recipe for romance calls for leaving out the lies…even if coming clean means risking everything.
(Synopsis from Goodreads)

My Thoughts: Cute! I had a great time reading this one. I loved the bakery setting. All the food just made my mouth water. I liked the undercover spy aspect to it. I liked how it had a character who suffered from chronic pain. The romance was just what I wanted too.
This book was just a fun one to flip through. I was hooked.
The cast of characters were a blast to get to know and read about.
I can see a lot of people enjoying this one, especially if they are a fan of food and contemporary romance.

She spent five years in rabbinical school before her chronic illness forced her to withdraw, and her father told her she should write a book—just not a Jewish one because no one reads those. Kissing Kosher is her third novel.

My Thoughts: I love a witchy book! As soon as I saw this, I knew I had to read it. It just has such fall vibes.
This book was a lot of fun! The synopsis really sold it for me. I liked all the elements that were brought together in the story.
This is the sequel to Small Town, Big Magic and you should probably read that one first, in order to appreciate everything that's happening. This book takes place very close after the events in Book 1.
This book was just a very cosy read. It was fun and I definitely want to read more from this author, and in this world.

My Thoughts: This is a fun series that I enjoy reading! It always keeps me turning the pages, wondering what is going to happen next.
Since this is part of a series, and the monster (killer) in this one is introduced in the first book, I think it would be smart to read the whole series. I don't think this is a book you can jump into without knowing anything.
I like following FBI agents Della and Mason. They make a good team.
If you're a fan of monsters and FBI investigations, you should definitely check out this series. I like it.

Synopsis: Sometimes the past we leave behind leads us right where we belong.

Talulah Barclay doesn’t like complications. Unfortunately, they seem to love her. Fourteen years after leaving her fiancé at the altar, Talulah returns to her hometown of Coyote Canyon, Montana, to settle her great-aunt’s estate. As she’d feared, her “runaway bride” reputation is waiting right where she left it, and her ex’s best friend, Brant, isn’t about to let her slip by unnoticed.

Brant has always been a loyal friend, but Talulah’s decision to run isn’t the only thing he hasn’t forgotten. He remembers more about Talulah than he cares to admit. Vividly. And it’s increasingly difficult to ignore her now, especially when they find themselves in close quarters. Talulah has no plans to stay in town after she fixes up her aunt’s Victorian farmhouse, even if the unbridled sparks with Brant give her a good reason to linger. Besides, bailing on relationships is kind of her thing. But a lot has changed since Talulah last turned tail—maybe her heart has changed, too?
(Synopsis from Goodreads)

My Thoughts: This was very cute and I had a good time reading it. It has a lot of things that I love reading in stories: a small town, a scandal, and a friends to lovers romance. There is also some forced proximity that just makes everything better.
I really enjoyed this one, and I can see a lot of other people liking it too.

BOOK REVIEW: One Dark Window by Rachel Gillig

Title: One Dark Window (The Shepherd King #1)
Author: Rachel Gillig
Published by: Orbit
Released: September 27, 2022
Source: Electronic Review Copy Provided by Publisher through Netgalley / Physical Copy Borrowed from Library

Synopsis: Elspeth needs a monster. The monster might be her.

Elspeth Spindle needs more than luck to stay safe in the eerie, mist-locked kingdom of Blunder—she needs a monster. She calls him the Nightmare, an ancient, mercurial spirit trapped in her head. He protects her. He keeps her secrets.

But nothing comes for free, especially magic.

When Elspeth meets a mysterious highwayman on the forest road, her life takes a drastic turn. Thrust into a world of shadow and deception, she joins a dangerous quest to cure Blunder from the dark magic infecting it. And the highwayman? He just so happens to be the King’s nephew, Captain of the most dangerous men in Blunder…and guilty of high treason.

Together they must gather twelve Providence Cards—the keys to the cure. But as the stakes heighten and their undeniable attraction intensifies, Elspeth is forced to face her darkest secret yet: the Nightmare is slowly taking over her mind. And she might not be able to stop him. (Synopsis from Goodreads)

My Thoughts: Thank you to the publisher for giving me the chance to read an early copy.
I loved this one! As soon as I started reading it, I just had that feeling that it was going to be a great book, and it was!
I just really enjoyed the vibes of it. The atmosphere of the story was a kingdom cut off from everyone else by this dangerous, magical mist. If you get lost in it, you lose your mind. The magic of the book was really neat too. Most of it was a cards-based system, where different cards would give you different powers. The cards are very rare and only the wealthy families seem to have them. There is also a prophecy that if anyone can get the full deck of cards, then they can save the kingdom and banish the mist.
Magic also can occur in another way, but it's infinitely more dangerous. Some people catch the sickness. If they don't die, but recover, they can gain a mystery magical ability. Unfortunately, these children are usually hunted down and killed before that occurs. Elspeth did catch the sickness. Her family protected her, she recovered, and now she has to continue to hide her abilities. Magic isn't all good though. The more you use it, the more you degenerate.
Elspeth shares her mind with a creature called The Nightmare. A creature that came from one of the cards. The Nightmare talks in riddles. He helps her out, granting her strength and speed when she needs it, but she can tell he hides things from her.
Then Elspeth meets Ravyn, the Captain of the King's elite soldiers. Is he a danger to her or not?
Yeah, I just really enjoyed this. The writing sucked me in. I was captivated by the story. It had a fake dating situation, which I'm always a sucker for. I couldn't stop reading it.
It ended on such a cliffhanger, so I NEED the sequel to see what happens next.

BOOKCITEMENT LEVEL 5/5!!

Synopsis: From the award-winning author of It Sounded Better in My Head comes a deliciously entertaining enemies-to-lovers romantic comedy about two high school nemeses who end up sharing a house together their first year of college

Eighteen-year-old Brooke is the kind of friend who not only remembers everyone’s birthdays, but also organizes the group present, pays for it, and politely chases others for their share. She’s the helper, the doer, the maker-of spreadsheets. She’s the responsible one who always follows the rules―and she plans to keep it that way during her first year of college.

Her student housing only has one "no unnecessary drama." Which means no fights, tension, or romance between roommates. When one of them turns out to be Jesse, her high-school nemesis, Brooke is determined she can handle it. They’ll simply silently endure living together and stay out of each other’s way. But it turns out Jesse isn’t so easy to ignore.

With Unnecessary Drama , Nina Kenwood perfectly captures the experience of leaving home for the first time, dealing with the unexpected complications of life, and somehow finding exactly what you need. (Synopsis from Goodreads
)

My Thoughts: I was sold by the premise of this. It sounded so cute and fun, and that there would be drama. Upon reading the book, I was proven right by my assumptions. This book is just a good time and I could see a lot of people really enjoying it.
I liked following our characters of Brook and Jesse. They made for believable barely adult college kids.
They had problems they had to deal with concerning family and life, but they weren't defined by them.
I really enjoyed this one. I'll definitely read more by Nina Kenwood.

Synopsis: From TikTok sensation Lloyd Devereux Richards, author of Stone Maidens, comes the next pulse-pounding thriller in which FBI agent Christine Prusik races to track down a serial killer who leaves a peculiar mark on his victims

Forensic anthropologist Christine Prusik has a knack for solving the most unusual cases--and for bending the rules in the process.

When the bodies of young women start appearing in the caves of Indiana and Illinois, Christine immediately jumps into action. But her Chicago field office is undergoing a reorganization, and the boys' club at the top seem more interested in getting all the paperwork in order than solving the murders.

Christine isn't going to let a little red tape stop her, and when she discovers that all the bodies have the same mysterious pin-sized bruise on the back of their necks, she realizes she'll have to confront her own inner demons to find the killer.
(Synopsis from Goodreads)

My Thoughts: I love the story behind this series. I remember seeing clips of the TikTok video and seeing the first book blow up in sales. It just reminded me that for all the bad stuff the internet can do, it can also have some really heartwarming stories.
I really enjoyed this thriller. I enjoy following our Forensic Anthropologist Christine. The science can get kind of heavy sometimes, but then you get sucked into the case.
This had a good writing style and I really enjoyed reading it.
I can see a lot of people enjoying this one. It's a thrill from start to finish.
