But seven years later, events conspire to force her to once again to accept her responsibility. If she refuses to take up the task, who will ensure the Book's ancient wisdom survives, safe from the hands of those who would use it for evil?

My Currently Reading Thoughts: I was really intrigued by the premise of this story. An ancient book passed from generation to generation of girls in this family. They undergo a ritual on their sixth birthday that sets them on the path to become masters of the book, becoming apprentices to the current keepers of the book. Megge's initiation night goes wrong, she touches the book, her fingers burn, and the book calls her Murderer! A six-year-old Megge is scared and wants nothing more to do with the book, and thus rejects the legacy of her family.
As Megge gets older, this rejection of the Book and the generations of her family that have kept it safe before her, causes hard feelings. Megge feels like she's not good enough, like her mother is disappointed in her. It also doesn't help that her year younger cousin seems to become the apple of her family's eye when she becomes apprentice, learning the magic of the book. But it seems that Megge and the Book aren't done, that maybe Megge will take up the task and protect it.
Because I am a bad reviewer, I can't give you my full review of Megge of the Bury Down because I haven't finished it yet. I will give you my currently reading thoughts. I will also post a full review once I finish it.
I like it! The premise intrigues me, I want to know more about this Book of Shadows, and what Megge must do to protect it. I also think the setting is very interesting. It's the late 1200's in Cornwall, that's a time period that I don't read a lot from. Imagining life in that time, I just couldn't. I definitely don't think I could have survived it.
I'm also interested in Megge's family. They seem to come from a long line of healers, the kind of people who often get suspected of witchcraft. I like how the craft, or the practices, have been passed down from child to child. Her family also seem to be outsiders. They don't live in town. They are looked upon with suspicion. Sure, wealthy families come to them for help, but they are outcasts because of what they do.
I also love the cover. I love the wood etch style and how it looks like an old book. The design gets an A+ from me.
I'm enjoying the writing style. It's very easy to read and get into. Overall, it's a good book.
That's my Currently Reading thoughts, look for the full review once I finish it. I will say, if you're looking for a unique, interesting book, I'd definitely recommend giving this one a shot.
