Reading Right Now! (328)

It is the end of another week. It's felt like a long week. It's felt like a weird week. Russia invaded Ukraine on 2/24/2022. That's a weird, sad, and powerless feeling. I am just watching the news and not knowing what to think. I'm not in any way connected to Russia or the Ukraine, but I wish it wasn't happening. I know bad stuff goes on in the world all the time, but this one has just caught my attention more, maybe because it's been all over the news.
As for reading, I've still been going so slowly. I don't really know why. I've started something new, so we'll see how far I get in it.

Glory in Death (In Death #2) by J.D. Robb -- This is the second book in the Eve Dallas series. I'm only a couple of pages in, so all I know is that the District Attorney has been killed and Eve is on the case. Roarke might show up again as a suspect.
This future that Eve lives in, I wouldn't want to live in it haha. Sure, it's got some cool technology stuff, but it wouldn't be a future I'd dream of. It's gritty and gray.

So that's what I'm Reading Right Now! What are you reading?

Reading Right Now! (327)

 Happy Weekend! Hooray!
So, what I'm Reading Right Now! is...

The Roomate (#1) by Rosie Danan -- I decided I needed a romance to read, and I've been eyeing this one for a while. I haven't read much of it yet, but I'm excited.

And that's what I'm Reading Right Now! What are you reading?

I am excited to be a part of the Blog Tour for Beach Wedding by Michael Ledwidge! I received a free electronic copy for honest review from the publisher. Thanks so much to Hanover Square Press and Michael Ledwidge for having me on the tour.

Title: Beach Wedding
Author: Michael Ledwidge
Published by: Hanover Square Press
Released: February 15, 2022
Source: Electronic Review Copy from Publisher
Goodreads      Amazon

Synopsis: Hamptons sand… Hamptons money… Hamptons murder…
When Terry Rourke is invited to the spare-no-expense beach wedding of his hedge fund manager brother, he thinks that his biggest worry will be flubbing the champagne toast. But this isn’t the first time Terry has been to the Hamptons.
As the designer tuxedos are laid out and the flowers arranged along the glittering surf, Terry can’t help but take another look at a decades-old murder trial that rocked the very foundations of the town—and his family. He soon learns that digging up billion-dollar sand can be a very dangerous activity. The kind of danger that can very quickly turn even the most beautiful beach wedding into a wake. (Synopsis from Goodreads)

My Thoughts: This was entertaining and fast-paced. I enjoyed my time reading it. I've never read anything by Michael Ledwidge before, but I could see myself reading more.
Our main character, Terry Rourke makes this case his everything. He was so laser-focused on it that he ignored other issues that could have used his attention.
I liked the setting of this, and the overall set up. It was a book that kept me hooked.

MICHAEL LEDWIDGE is the writer of seventeen novels, the last dozen being New York Times bestsellers cowritten with one of the world’s bestselling authors, James Patterson. With twenty million copies in print, their Michael Bennett series is the highest-selling New York City detective series of all time. One of their novels, Zoo, became a three-season CBS television series. He lives in Connecticut.

Thank you for checking out my Blog Tour Stop for Beach Wedding by Michael Ledwidge. Thanks so much to Hanover Square Press and Michael Ledwidge for having me on the tour. I'd look for this one and add it to your shelf.

Reading Wrap Up: January 2022

Why not, Why not do my January Wrap Up in the middle of February :D
2022 has not been super great for reading so far. Whenever a new year comes, I always think I'm just going to read all the books.
I finished four books in January. It's personally a little disappointing. I wanted to read so much more. Get a real lead when it comes to my Goodreads Reading Challenge, which I actually set for less than I did 2021. None of the books I read were bad, I just didn't prioritize reading like I should. I wasted time scrolling on my phone. Although, I have found out that I do enjoy Reading Sprints on Booktube. I never really used to watch them, but I tuned into one, and I did find that it helped me concentrate and read.
So, here's what I read in January 2022.

To Sir Phillip, With Love (Bridgerton #5) by Julia Quinn -- Bridgerton is so much fun. I'm continuing on with the series, and I read Eloise's story. I love Eloise on the show, she's pretty fun in the books too. I liked this book, but I kind of wanted a little more for Eloise's love story. I don't think I would have thought this would be the way she found love. Phillip took a little while to become swoon worthy. He was interested in a marriage of convenience, someone to take care of his kids and his house, which doesn't scream romance. I loved the banter. It was a lot of fun when the other Bridgerton's came to visit. I can't wait to watch Bridgerton Season 2 on Netflix, March 25!! They released the second teaser trailer and it looks so good!
I've got the next book in the series checked out from the library, Francesca's story!
BOOKCITEMENT LEVEL 4/5

Namesake (Fable #2) by Adrienne Young -- With this, I finished a series. Yayy! It's a duology. I think there is a book that is set in this same world, but it follows someone else. This is a pirate book. I love pirate books. This series was pretty good. I think it did pirate books proud. It follows a girl named Fable who was abandoned by her father and struggled to survive and get her revenge. She has a special skill where gems sing to her, so she dives to get them. She makes her way onto a ship with a crew that doesn't want her at first, and her adventure starts. Really good. I'm definitely reading more from Adrienne Young.
BOOKCITEMENT LEVEL 4/5

Wings of Ebony (#1) by J. Elle -- I got this from Netgalley and the Publisher for free for review. This was a miss for me. I was really looking forward to it, but it just didn't work for me. My main problem with it was the order it was told. The synopsis lays out a story that looks to have a strong beginning, middle, and end, but the actual book starts off a year after where it actually started. That probably doesn't make a lot of sense, but if you read it, you'll understand. I also didn't enjoy Rue that much. She just acts before she thinks. People are helping her with things, but she can be really rude to them. There was also a weird romance thing that was thrown in. I will read the sequel because I've got an arc of it, but I don't know what I'll feel about it. This first book was just disappointing.
BOOKCITEMENT LEVEL 3/5

Stolen (Otherworld #2) by Kelley Armstrong -- This is another series I continued and have been enjoying. This one was a lot stronger than the first book. We didn't have to worry about the world building, so we could get right into the action. I also liked that we were introduced to other creatures in the Otherworld. I'm excited to read more of it. The next book, we follow someone other then Elena, which will be fun. It's a paranormal romance series with witches, werewolves, demons, and more. It's good.
BOOKCITEMENT LEVEL 4.3/5

And that's all that I read in January 2022. I don't think there's one book that stands out as being my ultimate favorite. I'll try to keep these posts up for the year. I've read two books so far in February.

Synopsis: Things are heating up for Lila Macapagal. Not in her love life, which she insists on keeping nonexistent despite the attention of two very eligible bachelors. Or her professional life, since she can't bring herself to open her new cafe after the unpleasantness that occurred a few months ago at her aunt's Filipino restaurant, Tita Rosie's Kitchen. No, things are heating up quite literally, since summer, her least favorite season, has just started.
To add to her feelings of sticky unease, Lila's little town of Shady Palms has resurrected the Miss Teen Shady Palms Beauty Pageant, which she won many years ago--a fact that serves as a wedge between Lila and her cousin slash rival, Bernadette. But when the head judge of the pageant is murdered and Bernadette becomes the main suspect, the two must put aside their differences and solve the case--because it looks like one of them might be next. (Synopsis from Goodreads)

My Thoughts: This was a lot of fun to read. After the release of Arsenic and Adobo, I knew I needed to see what was going to happen next with these characters. I really love series like this. Just being around characters that you enjoy and watching them grow through various books. They are just a good time to read.
I'm a sucker for cozy mystery series, especially those that feature food. I always have fun with the mysteries. I had fun with the mystery in this one. Sometimes I try to solve them, but I am rarely successful.
I enjoyed this book, I enjoy this series. I can't wait to read more of them. If you want something that's just fun to read, definitely pick this up.

Reading Right Now! (326)

This world is crazy. I just escape through reading.
What I'm Reading Right Now! is...

Naked in Death (In Death #1) by J.D. Robb -- Yes, I am crazy and started a series that has 50+ books in it willingly. I've just always heard good things about this series, how it is a comfort series to a lot of people. I wanted that for myself.
I'm enjoying this so far. It gives me a little bit of the show CSI vibes. I like Eve Dallas. I'm not sure how I feel about Roarke. Like, he's very forward, and it's a little creepy. I don't think I would be attracted to that. I know he's supposed to be very good looking, but he has lust at first sight. I guess Eve kind of has it too.
I like it. I'm enjoying it. I'm ready to read more of it.

So that's what I'm Reading Right Now! What are you reading? I'm still feel like my reading is a little weird. I'm almost slumpy. I really hope that that goes away soon. It's not the books, it's me.

Romantic love has been one of the most essential elements of storytelling for centuries. In this collection, revered authors and sparkling newcomers, librarians and academicians, and avid readers and reviewers consider the mirrors and windows into Black love as it is depicted in the novels, television shows, and films that have shaped their own stories. Whether personal reflection or cultural commentary, these essays delve into Black love now and in the past, including topics from the history of Black romance to social justice and the Black community to the meaning of desire and desirability.

Review: Wings of Ebony by J. Elle

Title: Wings of Ebony (#1)
Author: J. Elle
Published by: Denene Millner Books
Released: 2021
Source: Electronic Review Copy from Netgalley / Physical Copy from Library

Synopsis: “Make a way out of no way” is just the way of life for Rue. But when her mother is shot dead on her doorstep, life for her and her younger sister changes forever. Rue's taken from her neighborhood by the father she never knew, forced to leave her little sister behind, and whisked away to Ghizon—a hidden island of magic wielders.
Rue is the only half-god, half-human there, where leaders protect their magical powers at all costs and thrive on human suffering. Miserable and desperate to see her sister on the anniversary of their mother’s death, Rue breaks Ghizon’s sacred Do Not Leave Law and returns to Houston, only to discover that Black kids are being forced into crime and violence. And her sister, Tasha, is in danger of falling sway to the very forces that claimed their mother’s life.
Worse still, evidence mounts that the evil plaguing East Row is the same one that lurks in Ghizon—an evil that will stop at nothing until it has stolen everything from her and everyone she loves. Rue must embrace her true identity and wield the full magnitude of her ancestors’ power to save her neighborhood before the gods burn it to the ground. (Synopsis from Goodreads)

My Thoughts: I received a free electronic copy for honest review from the publisher. Thanks so much to them for letting me read it. I read a physical copy through my library.
I didn't really like this. I feel a little bad, because I wanted to like this, but I just didn't really have a fun time.
One of my big problems was the order in which the story was told. The synopsis has the way the story should have played out, in my opinion. We meet up with Rue, her mother is murdered, she meets a father she's never known, she learns she's half-magic, she's whisked off to her father's world of Ghizon, and then the rest of the plot continues. That makes sense to me. That would have made for a more enjoyable story. Instead, we begin a year after everything has happened with Rue sneaking back to her old neighborhood to secretly check in with her sister. Rue is given rules that she's not to let her sister know she's there, and she can't touch her sister or the secret of Ghizon will be revealed to her, which would put her in danger. Rue proceeds to not follow any of these rules and then everybody's in trouble.
We never really got to know any of the ins and outs of Ghizon because there wasn't really any world-building there.
I didn't really enjoy Rue. She's very impulsive, which causes a lot of problems in this book. She can also be a little useless. She thinks her way is the only way. She's not very nice to the people that are trying to help her. She definitely doesn't give her father a chance. It seems like the whole year she was in Ghizon, she skipped all her classes and just listened to her earbuds all the time. I just wasn't that impressed with her.
She was unfair to her friend Bri, who spent the whole book just trying to help her.
It does have a fast-paced plot that was interesting to follow.
There's an evil Chancellor guy. There's secrets when it comes to Ghizon.
I didn't really, fully understand everything about the magic, because it wasn't explained. It was just kind of there.
I don't know if there's supposed to be a love triangle thing happening in this. It was rushed.
The ending was pretty abrupt. It just felt like a set up for the next book.
This book had some cool ideas, I just didn't like how it was executed. I wanted to like this more than I actually did.

Reading Right Now! (325)

Hooray for Friday! This Reading Right Now! post is not going to be that interesting, because I'm reading the same thing that I was last week. My reading for 2022 has started off very slow. I only finished 4 books in January, which isn't bad, but I saw myself reading so much more. Oh well
So, what I'm Reading Right Now! is...

Oculta (A Forgery of Magic #2) by Maya Motayne -- I am about 280 pages in, and I'm enjoying it. I liked the first book when I read it and I'm enjoying this one too. I don't really know how I feel about the romance. I mean, I do like them together, but right now it's just kind of awkward. It's weird seeing this tough thief Finn, who's so strong around everyone else, just kind of mooning over Alfie.
This is definitely a fun story. It has a cool world, neat magic. I like it.
This is a chunk of a book, which is one reason it's taking me a little while. The other reason is that I haven't been the best at setting aside time for reading when I come home from work.

I'd also like to start

Naked in Death (In Death #1) by J.D. Robb -- So many people love this series, and even though it's 50+ books, I want to start it too!
So many people say it's a comforting read to them, or something that they know they can enjoy even when in a reading slump, and I just want it to be my comfort series too. Am I crazy? Possibly.

So that's what I'm Reading Right Now! What are you reading?

BLOG TOUR: A Lullaby for Witches by Hester Fox

I am pleased to be a part of the Blog Tour for A Lullaby for Witches by Hester Fox! I received a free electronic copy for honest review from the publisher. Thanks so much to Graydon House and Hester Fox for letting me be a part of this tour!

Title: A Lullaby for Witches
Author: Hester Fox
Published by: Graydon House
Released: February 1, 2022
Source: Electronic Review Copy Provided by Publisher

Synopsis: Two women. A history of witchcraft. And a deep-rooted female power that sings across the centuries.
Once there was a young woman from a well-to-do New England family who never quite fit with the drawing rooms and parlors of her kin.
Called instead to the tangled woods and wild cliffs surrounding her family’s estate, Margaret Harlowe grew both stranger and more beautiful as she cultivated her uncanny power. Soon, whispers of “witch” dogged her footsteps, and Margaret’s power began to wind itself with the tendrils of something darker.
One hundred and fifty years later, Augusta Podos takes a dream job at Harlowe House, the historic home of a wealthy New England family that has been turned into a small museum in Tynemouth, Massachusetts. When Augusta stumbles across an oblique reference to a daughter of the Harlowes who has nearly been expunged from the historical record, the mystery is too intriguing to ignore.
But as she digs deeper, something sinister unfurls from its sleep, a dark power that binds one woman to the other across lines of blood and time. If Augusta can’t resist its allure, everything she knows and loves—including her very life—could be lost forever. (Synopsis from Goodreads)

My Thoughts: I love a mystery that goes across time. As soon as I read the synopsis for A Lullaby for Witches, I was hooked. It was just so excited to sit down and immerse myself in this story. I loved the alternating present and past set up. I just find books like that a lot of fun to read. I'm also a fan of a person in the present being connected to something in the past. Someone trying to solve a mystery that happened long, long ago.
This was great! I enjoyed every minute of it. I really got immersed in everything that was happening. I needed to know how it was all going to end. Hester Fox wrote a really gripping story that was exactly what I wanted. It combined witches, the past, the present, magic, an old house, and mystery. Just such a good combination of things.

Hester Fox is a full-time writer and mother, with a background in museum work and historical archaeology. BLOG TOUR: The Liz Taylor Ring by Brenda Janowitz

I am thrilled to be a part of the Blog Tour for The Liz Taylor Ring by Brenda Janowitz! I received a free electronic copy for honest review from the publisher. Thanks so much to Graydon House and Brenda Janowitz for having me on this tour!

Title: The Liz Taylor Ring
Author: Brenda Janowitz
Published by: Graydon House
Released: February 1, 2022
Source: Electronic Review Copy Provided by Publisher

Synopsis: In 1978, Lizzie Morgan and Ritchie Schneider embark on a whirlwind romance on the bright beaches and glamorous yachts of Long Island. Over the years, their relationship has its share of ups and downs, including a nine-month hiatus that ends with a stunning eleven-carat ring—one that looks just like the diamond Richard Burton gifted Liz Taylor after their own separation. Like the famous couple, despite the drama that would unfold throughout the Schneiders’ marriage, the ring would be there as a symbol of their love…until it wasn't.
Decades later, when the lost ring unexpectedly resurfaces, the Schneiders’ three children gather under one roof for the first time in years, eager to get their hands on this beloved, expensive reminder of their departed parents. But determining the fate of the heirloom is no simple task, unearthing old wounds and heartaches the siblings can't ignore. And when the ring reveals a secret that challenges everything they thought they knew about their parents’ epic love story, they’ll have to decide whether to move forward as a family or let the ring break them once and for all. (Synopsis from Goodreads)

My Thoughts: I really enjoyed this one. The synopsis really intrigued and grabbed me. I found it to be an entertaining read. It was a book that I kept picking up.
This is a book that's all about family drama. I find those books to be entertaining reads. We are following the children of Lizzie and Ritchie, who all want a piece of that heirloom ring. We also have flashbacks to the romance of Lizzie and Ritchie.
I just really enjoyed the premise of this one. It delivered a good story that kept me reading.
I'd recommend picking this one up. It's good.
